Sunday 8-29-10

Evening

During Guy's stay in the hospital, this blog became my outlet to keep those of you concerned informed with what was going on with Guy. I apologize for not keeping you more informed now that he is home.

He has been home.. two weeks this Tuesday. During that time, the kids and I have gone back to school and he has spent time during the day with several people. He has still not been cleared to stay alone, so Haley is left in charge while I run in the mornings and as we go to school I drop him off with his dad or with a wonderful friend, Terry Jackson. He spends many afternoons with various coaches at Southwest Baptist University. I am thankful for the christian coaches that walk the halls at the Myer Wellness Center who have talked, walked, and prayed with Guy. Your listening ears and strong faith have been a blessing to Guy.

Many people have called this weekend due to the fact that Guy was not on the Friday Night Football Show on the Jock 98.7. Guy is Ok and we are trying to figure the radio show out. I am afraid that someone may have taken advantage of Guy and myself while he was in the hospital. Please pray that I/We can see things for what the Lord intends them to be. He is ultimately in control.

Guy continues to get better each day. I anticipate him wanting to go through the drivers test as soon as the doctors release him to be left alone. His voice is better but not completely healed. He talks about his right foot feeling like it is asleep at times but this does not interfer with his walking (and after all the days where that right leg did not move-I am thankful that he is walking). His appetite has made a full recovery as of this weekend. He still tires easily and needs lots of rest, but overall his recovery could not be going any better.

I appreciate your continued prayers for Guy and our family.

Evening 8-15-10

Night 29

Who would have thought Guy would have made the progress that he has in the last 29 days? Many people have seen Guy and know that unless you knew he had an accident it would be hard to tell. He is walking and talking very well. It has really been a miracle, and the result of many many prayers. Thank you for all the words that have been lifted on his behalf and on the behalf of our family.

Guy will be released from MRC on Tuesday night or Wednesday morning of this week. He will still need 24/7 care for a while, just in case but overall he is doing very well. Committed to making some major changes in his life that will not only benefit his well being but our family as well. I will let him share more about that later.

As for our family, he will be coming home when released from MRC. He will not be able to drive until he retakes the drivers test (standard procedure for anyone who has a brain injury), so I will drop everyone off in the mornings before heading to school. He will be going to his parents shop or with his dad while the rest of us are in school.

Prayer for Guy
God's will be done
Continued healing
A smooth transition home
Understanding of financial changes I felt needed to be made at home (cutting fluff)
a job when he is ready

Prayer for the Famiy
a smooth transition home and into the new school year
wisdom and patients
rest and get up and go in the morning (everyone will have to do their part, to keep a happy momma :)

Note on/to the Newcomb kids:
I could not have three better kids! They have been great through this whole ordeal, traveling to different homes to stay a few days, back and forth to Mt. Vernon, and they have helped me at home and school. I know they are NOT perfect, but I would NOT trade them!! I LOVE you guys.. to the moon and back.

Evening 8-11-10

Night 25

I am sorry for not updating the Blog for a few days, my internet at home is not functioning correctly.

Guy has been at MRC (Missouri Rehab Center) for 6 days. He has three therapy sessions in the morning and three in the afternoon (Physical, Occupational, and Speech). He also meets with the psychologist. We had a family meeting today with all the therapist who work with Guy, a nurse, the social worker, myself, his father, and the psychologist. They all report that he is showing improvements daily. The biggest concerns are with balance, being safe, and making reasonable decisions. Guy would like to get out quickly but understands that he needs to stay. We will work on a day to day basis and hope that he stays until they tell him he is ready to be released.

Guy was able to move rooms today from the lockdown unit into the regular hallway. This allows him more freedom to move around, and his dad can check him out for lunch, to go watch football practice, or just to go for a drive. Guy also enjoys visitors during his 5-8:30pm time period. Thank you to so many for going by.

Prayer for Guy
God's will be done
Complete healing
A willingness to stay at MRC
Peaceful rest
Balance
Short term memory

Prayer for the Family
Patients
Understanding

***A special thanks to ALL the helpers that I had come into my classroom on Monday. What normally takes me days to clean, organize, and set up...took the army of people that arrived only 1 hour and 15 minutes!!!! I have several teachers in my building that would now like to post a time on this blog to get their rooms ready as well. I really appreciate all the help!!! Any of you grade papers as a hobby?

Evening 8-7-10

Evening 21

The transition yesterday did not go as smoothly as we had hoped. I believe Guy thought that he was just visiting Mt. Vernon and then going home. When he was told that he had to stay he was not very happy. With us making the move on a Friday afternoon most of the therapy for the day had already been complete. He had a couple people ask him questions but that was about all. He was very upset with family so I was thankful that a friend came in and spent the evening with him calming him down and reassuring him that things would be alright.

Today was much better he seemed calmer and ready to take on the rehab. This morning he had 3 therapist come in and give him initial tests/exams to get a feel for where he is with regards to the Brain Injury. Cognitively he is very bright answering all their questions correctly. His balance is off and he is unsteady when he walks also his short term memory is an area of concern. He remembers things from early in the summer but not what happened yesterday or this morning. He creates information that he wants to happen, such as the doctor said I could go home, the nurse just told me it was ok,etc. He is very impulsive: up, down, walking, sitting; when he falls asleep he is not asleep long before back up.

For those concerned that he is not getting a chew, a friend of his did sneak him a can of scoal so his tobacco needs have been met.

Tomorrow will be a hard day because it is Sunday and at MRC they relax, rest, and watch movies. Guy wants to be moving so pray for a calm day.

Prayer for Guy
God's will be done
Complete healing
A willingness to stay at MRC
Peaceful rest
Balance
short term memory

Midday 8-6-10

Day 19

WOW you guys are GOOD, Praise the Lord!

GUY IS MOVING TO MT. VERNON TODAY!!!

Guy should be released from the hospital today about 3pm and then we will have to drive him to Mt. Vernon. Since he normally drives when we go places together, I have asked his dad to drive him and I will follow close behind.

Pray now for safe travels today.

Morning 8-6-10

I am sorry that I did not post anything yesterday, I guess I was waiting for something to share.

Guy is STILL at COX South. So my main prayer request today is for a move to take place. Road blocks include insurance and a bed opening at the Missouri Rehab Center.

Guy has talked about checking himself out of the hospital and going home. Although it would be wonderful to take him home, that would not be the best thing for him. . I am not able at this time to care for him by myself or provide him with the therapy he needs. If you were to visit Guy, you would look at him and talk to him and not think there was anything wrong. If you stay for a while you will begin to notice that he has a very short attention span and is very impulsive with his actions. He is up and down out of bed, wanting to walk the hallways, TV on, TV off, flipping through channels, and asking the same questions over and over again. If he askes for something that can not happen (chew, going home, etc.)he gets irritated. After a few minutes on his feet he becomes very unsteady and even took a fall last night. He doesn't want people/nurses to touch him or give him any assistance at all, it adds to his irritation. I understand these behaviors to be related to the brain injury and some related to personality.

Hopefully that gives you a picture of where we are and things to pray for specifically. Again I am told that MRC will address the above behaviors and get Guy on a schedule that will keep him busy. PRAY for the move to happen today!

Prayer for Guy
God's will be done
Complete healing
a clear mind and less impulsiveness (obedient)
A TRANSITION to the new location

Prayer for the Family
Wisdom in all situations
Patients and Understanding of the brain injury

Message to the Newcomb Kids
Don't have to much fun at Granny and Papa's without me! I am in need of a baby calf count. Talk to you later.
Hugs and Kisses
I LOVE you!

Midday 8-4-10

We are still at Cox, the hold up is an insurance hold up. Mt. Vernon is ready for us as soon and the insurance is lined up. Guy is ready to be moving, he needs interaction and things to do. When just sitting he gets aggetated and impatient. I have been told in Mt. Vernon they will meet all his needs for the above list.

Prayer for Guy
God's will be done
Complete healing
a clear mind and less impulsive (obedient)
His right leg to continue to gain strength (he walked using the walker today, the right leg is weaker.)
Easy transition to the new location

Prayer for the Family
Wisdom in all situations
Patients while he is clearing his mind
Understanding of the brain injury

Message to the Newcomb Kids
See you in a bit!
Hugs and Kisses
I LOVE you!
